A POLAR EXPEDITION SAILING SHIP

A TRANSMITTER
SAILBOAT

After ATKA 1 and ATKA 2 which retraced two polar expeditions to Greenland of ATKA's crew, the ship is leaving for another year through the frozen waters in order to continue to embark young people on its scientific journey. This year for the first time in Luxembourg, three classes from the Collège et Lycée Vauban took part to the polar adventure.

The pedagogical team provided an adapted educational tools for this age level (10-12 years old) with written content, video and audio such as a logbook, a photo report, children's podcasts about sailors and scientists' stories, as well as living testimonies of men, women and children living on this unique volcanic island. Alongside the teachers, the educator ensured the dissemination of the media content, built halfway between the logbook and the web documentary.

2022-2023: a year of sailing exploration at the gates of the polar circle, in Iceland, to share experiences and emotions, discuss our models of society and impact the curiosity of the young generation.

ATKA

POLAR SCHOOL

”As educational coordinator of the sailboat ATKA, I am happy to have allowed young people to follow the sailboat on its adventure in Iceland. The educational team also offered interventions in classes in Luxembourg and Iceland, as well as live virtual visits from the port of Isafjordur in the northwest of Iceland.

We have created "LES CARNETS D'AULKA", a monthly newspaper magazine telling the Icelandic daily life of the character Aulka on board of ATKA. This fictional character was the spokesperson for the ATKA winterers in Iceland. It was a collaborative and fun medium to bring the Icelandic expedition to life.

THANK YOU to all the young people for your follow-up, your motivation, your questions and your smiles in the classes. Many thanks also to the teachers and school principals for trusting us, for carrying the project in your class/school and for giving us the chance to intervene with all of the students.”

"Our young reporters carried out a SCIENTIFIC exploration of Iceland"

Like real journalists, they conducted investigations this year to understand Iceland and its history, nature, culture and climate issues. Alongside the teachers, the ATKA team ensured the distribution of media content adapted to different levels. How is geothermal energy one of Iceland's great strengths? How do Icelanders live with still very active volcanoes? How do animals adapt to this climate? Once with all the answers in hand, they produced drawings, files, answered quizzes...

This program has been true resource for the teachers who were looking for didactic material to stir up the curiosity of young people, while inspiring passion for SCIENTIFIC discovery, spirit of adventure AND AWARENESS ON CLIMATE CHANGE.
